After class 12 with PCB, other than MBBS and BDS

Those students who would have made up their minds to take up MBBS or BDS, will not have any problem cracking their heads while choosing the course after class 12, with PCB as the bunch of subjects on hand.

Then, which are the other courses available for the students who would have given up Mathematics and would have chosen Biology? Can a student with a Biology background, do MBA or B.Tech.,? which other course is on par with MBBS, in learning the subjects and helps in getting a lucrative job associated with a hospital?

By the way, in my previous post, I mentioned about the Common Universities Entrance Test as a screening Examination for both Undergraduate/ Integrated and Postgraduate programs to seek admissions in the 12 Premier Central Universities. Other than these Universities, admissions into the other esteemed Universities, in India or abroad, are purely based on the performance in ‘their Entrance examination for screening’.

1. Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.,) is one of the most sought-after courses and a foundational undergraduate program for a period of 3 -4 years. The courses with an internship or integrated Master’s degree last for 3.5 years to 4 years.

This program throws many lucrative employment opportunities across various industries and R&D fields.

Admission mode- Entrance Test or based on Merit.

The course can be a General course with a spectrum of related branches of the bunch of core subjects like PCB or CBZ or an altogether different combination of three subjects with Biology as a subject of interest. Each year/ semester, this course makes one experience the taste of varied different branches under the domain of science and allows the student to choose one of the three subjects of one’s liking for the Master’s programme or the Bachelor’s can be an Honours programme focusing on one predominant subject with an in-depth study during the whole span of one’s undergraduate programme. Those who get groomed under B.Sc., Honours, show a liking to get into the field of Research.

Employment opportunities after doing Bachelor’s in Science- as a Scientist in small-scale start-ups or in Big industries like ITC, BRITTANIA, PARLE, KISAN, etc., as an Anesthesiologist, Biology Researcher, Chemist, Research Analyst, Professor, Lecturer (with UGC-NET), as a Technical Writer, Pharmacist, Plant Biochemist,

2, Bachelor of Science (B.Sc., General ) with Chemistry, Botany and Zoology (CBZ) / physics, Chemistry, and Biology as a group of three subjects / unconventional combination of subjects.

Bachelor of Life Science courses in demand are the ones in Microbiology / Forensic Science/ Radiology/ Cardiology/Food Technology/ Home Science/ Psychology/ Agricultural Science/ Nursing/ Anthropology, Biomedical Science/ Genetics/ Optometry/ Environmental Science/ Nutrition, and dietetics / Fisheries/ Veterinary Science/ Bioinformatics/Anesthesia / Horticulture/ Occupational Therapy/ Clinical Research.

No need to appear for NEET to pursue any of the aforesaid courses.

With the three subjects (PCB/CBZ) in the armor, Unlike a B.Sc., Honours, one can take up any one subject for one’s Master’s degree.

The above-mentioned courses groom one well for one’s Master’s degree programme in one’s homeland or abroad.

3. Bachelor of Science (B.Sc., Hons)

With only one subject as the sole subject of priority study. It can be only Physics /Chemistry/ Biology for the whole duration of the study. Each of these subjects has its ramification and does not digress from the core subject and does not tap into the other two core subjects.

Here, having studied only one subject in detail, for three years, one cannot switch to any of the other two subjects for one’s post-graduation. If a student chooses to take up Chemistry Honours, he /she would be studying topics from Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry for the whole duration of the Undergraduate Programme and is forced to do a Masters only in Chemistry.

4. Bachelor of Medical Microbiology

This comes as a 3 year and 6 months (internship) Undergraduate programme.

The syllabus contains Parasitology, Epidemiology, Microbiology, Pathology, Immunology, etc. This field doesn’t need much of an introduction about employment opportunities. After successful completion of the course, one can get employed in Biotechnology companies/ universities/ colleges, Pharmaceutical Companies, Forensic Science Laboratories, as a Scientist/ Analyst/ Food Technologist in Research labs that come under Multinational Food Industries, or as an Ecologist or as a pharmacologist, etc.,

5. Paramedical Sciences

If one has taken Biology along with Physics and doesn’t want to become a doctor by taking MBBS/BDS, one should think of this alternative. The health sector is growing and evolving rapidly and is playing a pivotal role in shaping and contributing to the economy of the country. Paramedics are the backbone of any medical industry in any country on Earth.

Paramedics are the ones who handle emergencies and perform various medico-technical roles. After completing a bachelor’s degree, one can take up a Master’s in Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, and Doctoral Degree in Pathology/ Anesthesia/ Radiodiagnosis

NEET is not required for this course. A few Universities have their own entrance exams to screen the student aspirants.

6. Bachelor in Pharmacy– Concerning this course, we have already discussed this in our previous post.

7. B.Sc., Physiotherapy/ BPT

This domain includes health promotion with customized treatment, rehabilitation, and exercises post-trauma/ post-surgery. Physiotherapists assist doctors in patients’ rehabilitation and are known to be a gratifying career.

Under this, one can choose to become a Physiotherapist by taking up Bachelor in Physiotherapy (BPT)

Employment opportunities- in Multi-specialty hospitals, Orthopedic sections in earmarked clinics, and is a promising profession to think about. They work with athletes and help in rehabilitation on-ground and off-ground.

8. Bachelor in Radiology

NEET is not required for this course. With the degree, one can become a Radiology Technologist/ Radiographer/ Ultrasound Technician/ Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, etc.,

Job opportunities in small scale hospitals and Multi-speciality hospitals

9. Bachelor in Computer Science-with PCB as a combination of subjects, one can do this course which is more concept-oriented.

The duration of the study is 3 yrs. Job opportunities are as good as for an undergraduate Bachelor of Computer Application ( 4 yrs)

10. One can do B.Tech., in Biotechnology in Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) by appearing for the Entrance Test ( VITEE) conducted by the Institute.

Eligibility Criteria – one should have secured an aggregate of 60% in PCB at the class 12 level.

11. One can pursue a Five Year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) from the Indian Institute of Management Indore, soon after finishing class 12
